Euonymus europaeus – Spindle

A small tree with bright red autumn fruit. The wood is hard and straight and was used to make spindles for spinning cotton. The term ‘spinster’ is a derivation. It also makes good charcoal drawing sticks: if you take small lengths, bundle them tightly in a metal box and place in a fire or woodburner for about ½ hour you will produce charcoal for drawing.
