Buxus sempervirens – Common Box

Rare in the wild but widely planted in gardens as a compact evergreen hedge or border edging. Its dense foliage makes it ideal for topiary. It is slow growing and stately. Its wood when unseasoned is so dense it will not float and is sought after for turning and carving. Chess pieces were sometimes made from box.
